Overseas Expedition - Diwa Delima 2019/2020

Overseas Expedition is an annual overseas volunteering project by NTU Perbayu and organised by NTU-NIE students. This project is divided into two elements - construction and education. For construction, the team plans and build systems that can help to improve the livelihoods of the locals. Some examples that the team has successfully constructed include water filtration systems, proper pavements and drainage. The team also provides an avenue for the community to be self-sufficient through the construction of small farms for the community to grow their own crops. The process of such construction is scaled based on the resources and skills that are accessible and feasible for the students.

For education, it is aimed to equip the local children with skills and expertise that can allow them to have better prospects for employability. Examples of what has been taught include English language, independent life skills, financial literacy and environmental awareness such as waste management and recycling. Social enterprise initiatives are also included where it provides them a channel to sell the crops they have grown. The content taught would be decided by the planning committee ergo, it is uniquely catered to the beneficiaries.

Furthermore, there are also trips before and after the expedition, namely the pre-trip and post-trip. Both projects are carried out in the same community in Singapore. The pre-trip serves as a testing ground for the programs planned for the overseas expedition. As they revisit the same community for the post-trip, the team is able to reassess the success of the project and evaluate any weaknesses that can be improved. This year’s overseas expedition is a continuation of last year’s, as they plan to develop a project that is more sustainable and have lasting impacts on the community
