The Green Wonderland

The Green Wonderland

Date       : 27th January 2021

Venue    : TR213 & TR214

Ever dreamt of living in a fantasy world? Club Sci·Napse helped to fulfil the dreams of participants by having them create their very own terrarium. Perfect as a decoration for their room, many of them took photos of your wonderful masterpiece and posted their aesthetic terrariums on Instagram.

The workshop, in collaboration with Club Arnex, provided a great learning opportunity for them to understand more about the biodiversity of a closed system. Through this workshop, an interest in Biology was sparked in participants, where they showed a greater appreciation for the environment. The event brought NIE students of different disciplines together to build their own individual terrarium. They also acquired new creative skills with the designed hands-on activities and design a terrarium with their own imagination. Furthermore, NIE students may bring their friends along for the workshop, which in turn will help them foster a stronger bond with each other.

Facilitators engaged participants in a step-by-step guide on how the terrarium is made. The comprehensive steps on terrarium making are listed below:

  1. Select a glass jar.

  2. Place a handful of rocks at the bottom of the container (Different types of rocks can be used).

  3. Dried sphagnum or sheet moss is soaked in water for a few seconds and squeezed dry.

  4. Place the slightly damp moss onto the rocks, patting it down so that it fills the entire surface area and forms a barrier that keeps the soil from falling into the rocks.

  5. Scoop the soil into a funnel and fill the container with several inches of it (The succulent planted will determine the type of soil used).

  6. Decorate the terrarium with figurines.

  7. Water the succulents to help prevent transplant shock.
