Amazing Race

Date               : 19th January 2019 (Saturday)

Venue             : Vivocity/ Sentosa

While actors and divas socialize and schmooze in a beach party hosted by a millionaire, Carter Richman, an unnatural death was reported. As a newly inaugurated detective, you are called upon to find the murderer by cracking through all the glamour and unravelling the conspiracies made. Will it be someone tired of living in the shadows? An old foe back for revenge? Or possibly a jealous starlet who will do anything to get rid of her competitor?  It is up to you to uncover the clues and sieve through the sea of lies, or else the culprit will remain concealed.

Participants acted as newly inaugurated detectives, who were deployed to help solve the murder mystery. Before the event, participants received “interrogation reports” which were sent to them through their email. These interrogation reports serve to introduce the suspects of the case.

Participants were engaged in a series of tasks where they made use of various skill sets to solve critical problems. The teams went through various stations which consisted of forensic science activities and puzzles. Upon completion of each station, points were allocated, and clues were given. These clues aided the teams in guessing the murderer and the weapon.

The various possible routes of each group of participants had been designed and evaluated before the event. The estimated travelling time of all groups would be about 3.5 to 4 hours. At each station, each group would be given a clue, but some stations may contain misleading clues. Each station had its own point system to determine the winning teams. May the best group win!

Each group would have finished all 6 stations before they were directed to the “Senior Detectives” at Siloso Beach where they would guess the murderer and the weapon used. Prizes are given in accordance to the group with the most points.

  • 1st Prize: $150 Capita Vouchers per group

  • 2nd Prize: $100 Capita Vouchers per group

  • 3rd Prize: $50 Capita Vouchers per group

  • Consolation Prizes: $25 Capita Vouchers per group

This event brought student teachers from various programmes offered in NIE together and served as a platform for them to learn from each other through a range of meaningful tasks. The mystery, tasks and challenges are based on the 4 different Sciences, applied in Forensic Science. They are designed to push student teachers to think critically and creatively in a fun and engaging manner. We hope that this event will inspire the participants to create similar experiences for their students in the future. Furthermore, this event will also allow student teachers to socialise and expand their social circles beyond their own study groups and forge new friendships with student teachers across the various programmes.

Through this event, student teachers will be able to build teamwork. Teamwork is a virtue that should be encouraged as it facilitates effective communication and accomplishment of tasks. Upon successful development of this virtue of teamwork, participants can better engage in strategic thinking, while collating ideas to resolve the challenging problems.
